What is heart failure?

Heart failure might be known as congestive heart failure, in which the heart does not pump enough blood to meet the body's needs, but treatments can help to improve the signs and symptoms of heart failure and live longer. 

What are the types of heart failure?

There is much reason for heart failure, but the most important are these two types:

  1. Heart failure with a reduced left ventricular function
  2. Heart failure with preserved left a ventricular function

What are the signs and symptoms of heart failure?

  1. Shortness of breath
  2. Fatigue and weakness
  3. Rapid or irregular heartbeat
  4. Reduced ability to exercise
  5. Swelling in your legs, feet, and ankles.
  6. Swelling of your abdomen (ascites)
  7. Cough or wheezing with white or pink blood-tinged phlegm
  8. Increased need to urinate at night
  9. Very rapid weight gain from fluid retention
  10. Lack of appetite and nausea
  11. Chest pain if your heart failure is caused by a heart attack

Sometimes the symptoms are mild or maybe no symptoms at all. This does not mean that the patient has no longer have heart failure.

It is very important for patients to manage their other health conditions, such as kidney disease, diabetes, anemia, thyroid disease high blood pressure, and asthma or chronic lung disease. Some conditions have signs and symptoms that are similar to heart failure.

What causes heart failure?

Heart failure can be caused by many other medical issues that damage the heart muscle. Common conditions are:

    1. Coronary artery disease
    2. Heart attack.
    3. Cardiomyopathy.
    4. Heart defects present at birth (congenital heart disease)
    5. Diabetes
    6. High blood pressure (hypertension).
    7. Arrhythmia (abnormal heart rhythms, including atrial fibrillation)
    8. Kidney disease
    9. Obesity (being overweight)
    10. Tobacco and illicit drug use
    11. Medications. Some drugs used to fight cancer (chemotherapy) can lead to heart failure.

It is important to let your doctor know if you have new symptoms or if your symptoms get worse.
