What is fasting?

What is the best time to keep fast?
There are many advised by good dieticians to keep fasting from 8 pm to 12 noon the next day for 16 hours. As per many scriptures the best time to fast from daybreak to sunset. Better to keep fast weekly a day (Thursday), twice a week (Monday and Thursday) or 30 days continually in a year.

Nobel Prize winner in Medicine Dr.Yoshinori Ohsumi said fasting for 12 to 14 hours without food and water for 20 to 27 days helps to fight cancer cells. In his research on Autophagy, he said cells break down proteins and other cell components and use them for energy. (Autophagy – meaning “self-eating” of intracellular degradation system wherein unwanted cargo, such as old or damaged organelles, unneeded proteins).
