What is Liposuction?

Liposuction, also known as lipoplasty is a type of cosmetic surgery that helps to remove excess fat from the body and to improved body shape. This procedure is done by a hollow instrument known as a cannula. It’s mostly used to treat on the buttocks, neck, chin, abdomen, thighs, upper and backs of the arms, calves, and back.

  1. Tumescent liposuction - A local anaesthetic is used to numb the area of your body where the tube will be inserted.
  2. Ultrasound liposuction - This makes it easier to remove liquefy the fat by ultrasound technique. This technique may be particularly helpful in removing fat from the neck, upper abdomen, sides, and back.
  3. Laser liposuction - This technique uses low-energy waves to liquefy the fat, which is removed through a small cannula.

Liposuction signs include if founds excess fats on below parts:

  • Abdomen
  • Arms
  • Buttocks
  • Calves and ankles
  • Chest and back
  • Hips and thighs
  • Neck
  • Coronary artery disease,
  • Diabetes

Liposuction risk factor includes:-

  • Swelling
  • Scars
  • Numbness
  • Post-operative weight gain
  • Temporary swelling
  • Bruising
  • Soreness
  • Rippling skin.
  • Permanent colour changes in the skin.
  • Uneven skin surface over the treated area.
  • Damage to the nerves and skin.

Before surgery, the surgeon and anaesthesia doctors will guide you about benefits and risk factor of Liposuction surgery.

Step 1 – Anesthesia

Liposuction surgery takes 30 to 60 minutes by giving local or general anaesthesia to relieve pain.

Step 2 – The incision

The cosmetic surgeon will mark fatty areas to remove the hips, abdomen, thighs and flanks.  A cannula will be inserted by small incision to carried fat with suction. Liposuction helps eliminate unsightly bulges by removing localized fat deposits.

Procedures involve a 3-step process of Liposuction.

  • Separation - remove the unwanted fat cells from the body without harming the blood vessels, skin and other tissues.
  • Aspiration – Patients fat cells are gently removed with suction and without damaging nerves, blood vessels, skin.
  • Fat Equalization – smooths out the remaining thin fat layer, leaving behind a uniform layer of ‘local fat grafts’ that prevents contour deformities from forming

The cosmetic surgeon will mark a circle or lines on the parts of the body to remove the fats and will take photos to compare it after post-surgery.

Liposuction procedure is done by various techniques:

  1. Ultrasound-assisted liposuction (UAL): By the help of ultrasound energy cosmetic surgeon inserts a metal rod under the skin to ruptures the fatty tissue and liquefies the larger amounts of fat for easier removal from the body.
  1. Tumescent liposuction: By the help of tumescent technique for liposuction the cosmetic surgeon makes a tiny incision into the skin and inserts a thin tube (cannula) under the skin to reduce the bleeding. The fat is sucked out through the hollow tube by using surgical vacuum attached to the cannula.
  1. Powered liposuction: By the help of vacuum like device the cosmetic surgeon pulls out tough fat more easily. In Powered liposuction involves removal of fats from smaller areas like arms, knees, ankles, neck and it is less painful and less swelling.
  1. Laser-assisted liposuction (LAL). By the help of high-intensity laser light, the cosmetic surgeon inserts a laser fibre through a tiny incision to liquefy fat and then removes via a cannula.

Step 3 – Closing the incisions

The cosmetic surgeon flaps the skin after the liposuction by the help of Sutures, skin adhesives, tapes or clips that close the skin incisions.

Step 4 –The results

Post liposuction swelling settles after about 4 weeks and the treated area should look less bulky.  Liposuction results are generally long lasting if you maintain you’re their weight.

  • The patient is required to go for PSC ( Pre-surgery check-up )  to do some blood test, ECG and ECH for Cardiac check-up and urine tests to know he /she is fit for surgery or not.
  • Before the operation, you’ll be asked to sign a consent form, which gives the surgeon permission to carry out the treatment.
  • The doctor should be informed about any medication that the patient may be taking.
  • The patient is admitted to the hospital on same days before the procedures and advised to remain empty stomach/Fasting.
  • Thinners medicines have to stop before ten days of surgery.
  • Patient advises taking liquids for the first 1-3 days.
  • Wear compression stockings to prevent deep vein thrombosis.
  • Take over-the-counter painkillers to relieve pain.
  • Patient advises to take small amounts of food after stomach surgery and you need to avoid simple sugars such as soft drinks and candy.
  • The patient should chew your food well when eating.
  • Do not smoke, as smoking delays healing and increase the risk of complications
  • The patient may carefully resume exercise and vigorous physical activity 2 to 4 days after surgery.
  • Recovery from surgery usually takes between 4 and 6 weeks

Liposuction surgery success rate is dependent on the skill of the cosmetic surgeon and procedures chosen by the candidate. Post liposuction swelling settles after about 4 weeks and the treated area should look less bulky.  Liposuction results are generally long lasting if you maintain you’re their weight.
